I am a chartered project professional and a chartered manager, and my main work is independent assurance — telling boards whether a programme will actually deliver. That is a job about evidence: establishing what is true, saying so plainly, and being able to show your working.

This line exists because the same discipline turns out to be what smaller organisations need from a website and almost never get. Not a prettier site — a site somebody can vouch for. Accessible because it was built that way. A privacy set-up that survives the question. Documented, so the answer to “who looks after this” is not a shrug.

I build in the evenings and at weekends, alongside a senior day job, and I take on a small number of builds a year. That is why the response commitments on this site are the ones I can always meet rather than the fastest ones I could type.

Part of Bowers Advisory

How this sits alongside the assurance practice.

Bowers Web Design is part of Bowers Advisory — Tom Bowers’ independent practice.

They are one company and two registers. Bowers Web Design sells a product — a website, at a published scope, for a fixed fee, in a fixed time box. Bowers Advisory sells an engagement — senior accountability for an outcome, scoped and quoted, with no ceiling. A migration, a membership area, payments or several suppliers to hold together is the second kind of job, and it is handled there rather than here.

The independence firewall

Where I build a site, I don’t also sell you an independent review of it. Those are two different jobs and you get one of them from me, not both.

Bowers Advisory sells an independent pre-build review — a written read on whether somebody else's proposal is sound. I cannot sell you that and also build the site, because the second one pays me to like the first one's answer. One mode per client per programme, declared in writing at mobilisation.

What I do not do

The boundary, stated once.

E-commerce, payments, membership areas and logins. Email hosting and migration. New builds on third-party platforms — a Refresh works on whatever you already have, but when I build from scratch I build on my own stack. Ongoing search campaigns beyond the get-found basics. And I cannot work on a platform I cannot get access to, which is worth checking before we start.

If you need any of those, I will say so early and point you somewhere sensible instead of stretching to fit.
